The Fremont bridge is a arch bridge and is one of the tallest bridges in Portland. The Fremont bridge has two decks. There is a lower deck that is for cars moving east and there is a top deck that is for cars moving west. The Fremont’s top 381 feet above the
salty water. There are no sidewalks on the bridge. The Fremont bridge was built in 1973 for a large amount that is $82 million. That is a large amount right? Can you believe that more than 90,000 vehicles use the Fremont bridge each day.
When the Fremont bridge was in construction, the tall, large middle span was built about one mile away at Swan Island. The Fremont bridge was taken up the river on barges, then the bridge lifted 175 feet into place. The center span weighs 12 million pounds. It used to be 10 times heavier that the previous record. This exact event went right in the Guinness Book of World Records.
People had a disagreement about the name of the bridge. Everybody thought it might be good to have a person who traveled, so they picked John Charles Fremont. He explored Oregon in 1842. John Charles Fremont was called “the pathfinder.”
The Fremont bridge is my favorite type of bridge!!!
